Like other Cricut machines, the Xtra works with Cricut Design Space, which is free to use. The new machine retails for $199, and it comes with a mini weeding tool and fine-point pen. This new mid-size model is more compact yet still offers most of the same functionality as a full-size Cricut. I tested out the new Joy Xtra for a few weeks, and I think it’s the perfect option for casual crafters.

We could stick it over here and it would mean the same thing, essentially. So we need to attach it to this card so that, when we go to use our pen, it actually it goes onto our card itself, right? And now it’s all attached and ready to go. And just to make sure I’ve explained, I don’t remember if I explained this part yet, this is my third class today. Over here on the left is our font menu and it’s defaulted to Cricut Sans. If we click it, we get access to all of the fonts.
You’ll notice a little icon with that same image shows up here. You can select more than one at a time, so I can click on that butterfly too, and it shows up right next to it. So if I keep scrolling and I’m like, oh, hey, I want a snail too. But I just want the deer, so we’re gonna go up and unselect that one.
And my signature here is already preset to draw for you, I did that. And you’ll notice that it’s also already attached to the card, but this new layer that we’ve made is not attached. We need to attach that to our card. Otherwise, your Cricut will want to write this on nothing. So right now it’s just a text, but we haven’t said where we’re gonna put it, and it’s independent. So like, it’s just out there floating around, even though we stuck it out here, that doesn’t mean anything to… It’s just a place that we could put it.
Now, let’s move to the next step, which is to connect Cricut to Mac via Bluetooth. Cricut Design Space is compatible with a wide range of materials, including vinyl, paper, cardstock, fabric, and more. Be sure to check the material compatibility guide for specific details. While Cricut Design Space primarily operates online, you can use the offline feature to access your projects without an internet connection. However, some features may be limited in offline mode.
Also, I don’t think the pen is gonna write that. We need, and also it’s like, not even like centered or anything. It doesn’t look like a certificate to me, so we need to do a few things here. Now don’t go double clicking this file. It’ll just be confusing and it won’t lead you. It won’t like open up magically in Design Space, which would be wonderful, but it doesn’t do that.
After that, we will see how to setup Cricut. Now, you need to know the basic needs for the Cricut setup. It is essential to know the basic needs because we will download and install Design Space. If your Mac does not meet the basic needs, it will fail to run properly.
But most people just scroll this list. They’re in reverse chronological order. There’s nearly 400, although by the time that you’re watching this video into the future, there could be a lot more. So right now, this project that we’re doing tonight is at the top of the list, but it might not be when you see it. All my projects are numbered so you can find them easier. All right, so when you are in my library, the first link that you see goes to the file itself.
For example, my Cricut Explore Air has a button you have to press to load and unload your mats, but the Xtra does it automatically. It has a sensor that detects when you place a mat on the machine and automatically pulls it in. The Cricut Joy Xtra is the latest cutting machine from the brand. Yes, Grid Lines are allowed to be turned off by Design Space. There are also Keyboard shortcuts.
